Called in the Ojibwe language Gakaabikaang (at the falls), the city grew up around the Saint Anthony Falls, the only waterfall on the Mississippi River and the end of the commercially navigable section of the river until locks were installed in the 1960s. Father Louis Hennepin was the first European to explore the area, giving the falls their name, as well as lending his name to the county in which Minneapolis is located. The nearby Fort Snelling spurred the growth of villages and towns in the area. A lumber mill was built on the falls in 1822 to supply the fort. In the 1840s, settlers were not allowed to stay on land controlled by the military without special permission, so the first settlement...

Minneapolis arts

Minneapolis claims to have the highest per capita attendance at theater and arts events outside of New York City and Chicago. The region is reportedly the third-largest theater market in the country, attracting major performances. The Guthrie Theater is the most famous theater in the city. Minneapolis also supports two Tony Award winning theater companies: the Children's Theatre Company and Theater de la Jeune Lune. In order to help revitalize the downtown and warehouse district areas of Minneapolis, which had declined in the mid to late 20th century, the city purchased and renovated a few theaters on Hennepin Avenue to create the Hennepin Theatre District, including the State, Orpheum, and Pantages...

A system of "skyways" (small, fully enclosed pedestrian bridges) link the buildings across more than 60 city blocks of the downtown region, providing a way to travel around the city without being exposed to the wide temperature extremes of the climate. The system is widely used by the daytime worker population and downtown residents, who are able to move around without their coats and other outdoor gear all day long. The street-level foot traffic is greatly reduced (especially as the outdoor temperature dips) and many businesses that would normally be located at ground level in other cities are instead brought up to the second floor. In fact, the interconnected passageways that include restaurants...

Minneapolis has a large park system consisting of ten square miles (26 km2) of land and water that is interlinked in many places. The Grand Rounds Scenic Byway circles through the city and brings together many of the bigger park areas including land along the Mississippi River, many of the city's lakes, and other scenic areas of the city. The route has a parkway for cars (not a freeway—literally just a roadway through park land, though the number of stops is reduced), a bikeway for riders, and a walkway for pedestrians all running in roughly parallel paths along the 50-mile route. It is the first natural scenic byway totally located in a major urban area(dubious; discuss) . Additional routes...

Coffee intake linked to lowerdiabetes risk Drinking coffee, especially when itis decaffeinated, will be associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, according to a report in the Sept 26 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. The link between coffee and diabetes riskappears to be very consistent across different ages and body weights; in addition, most research has found that the more coffee an individual drinks, the lowerhis or her risk for diabetes. However, it remains unclear whether it is thecaffeine or any other ingredient in coffee, which may confer a protective effect. Mark A. It is obvious to me why the Northeast U.S. is flooded. That part of the country is full of Democrats, gays, Amish and small children who sass their parents. God is punishing them. Oh I know what you are thinking. "Well Washington was flooded too." Yes, that's true, but did you notice that the only building that had to be closed down for a month was the IRS? In that case, it's a blessing and a gift to those in high places for "staying the course." One man's curse is another man's blessing. God has, no doubt, been waiting for Hurricane season to start up again in the U.S.It's the smitting season for God and he anticipates it like a serial killer who also happens to be a loving father type to...

1) Make it part of the agenda.Put the arrival time on the agenda. For example, for a meeting scheduled to start at 9:00 AM, you could put "8:50 AM - - - Arrive at the Meeting" at the top of the agenda. An arrival time is useful because it allows everyone time to socialize, obtain coffee, or organize materials before the meeting. It also ensures everyone is present at the scheduled starting time.2) Offer a treat.Provide coffee, juice, or a vegetable platter before the meeting. This can be especially welcome for all-day meetings attended by people from other locations. It provides a time for socializing between visitors and it may also provide a meal for those who came from out of town. But here's the...

A tomato importer, John Nix, decided to challenge the law after scrutinizing the Tariff Act. His case relied on the fact that tomatoes were a fruit and not vegetable, therefore, it should not be subjected to the Tariff Act. Nix's objections brought the case to the Supreme Court in 1893. Although Nix had a solid case, the Supreme Court rejected the botanical facts and continued to refer to tomatoes as a vegetable.Plant family Tomatoes belong to the genus Lycopersicon, while potatoes belong to the genus Solanum; Both of which belongs to the same "flowering plant family" solanaceae. I've a confession to make. I used to be Santa Claus. Not the real Santa, of course, but one of the Shopping Mall Santas who help out the Big Guy in Red, filling in for him in department stores and malls around the country talking to children and having their pictures taken with them. A great part time job that lasts only one month a year, from the day after Thanksgiving up to Christmas Eve.How did I get into this gig? By answering a help wanted ad in the local newspaper that said, simply, "Now Hiring Santas. Training Provided." And a number. I had no idea until that day that temporary employment agencies provided Santas for stores, but as a child I'd sat on the big elf's lap, told him my...

How To Find Truly Valuable Restaurant Guides

One thing that I enjoy very much when going on a vacation or just traveling somewhere special is when we try different restaurants and places to eat. Of course, when we go to a new place, we don't know where we can find the best food. Therefore, usually we used restaurant guides to help us find restaurants in an unknown town. Soon, we realized that restaurant guides most of the time provided us with disappointing results. We found out that restaurant guides were not giving us correct information about the best places to eat as they were usually printed by restaurant owners who were advertising their business. We needed a more reliable method than restaurant guides were. In the quest for an effective...

Dunn Bros Coffee was founded by Ed Dunn in 1987. In college, he took note of the success of coffeehouses in certain areas of the country. To gain a deeper grasp of the industry, Ed Dunn immersed himself in the food service industry and coffee-related retail work. Particularly, in December of 1987, Ed opened his first coffeehouse with the help of his brother, Dan, in St. Paul, Minnesota. The two decided to open the Dunn Bros Coffee in St. Paul because the area was similar to Portland, Oregon--another area of the country with a large coffee-drinking population. Dunn Bros Coffee is a coffee franchise spreading across the Midwest. Dunn Bros Coffee has locations in Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, South...

Write your own article.Okay, that might sound a bit too easy. Yet with the possible exception of public speaking, nothing establishes your business credibility like penning an article with your name and company in the byline. Yet even with all the content-starved publications out there, very few businesses take advantage of this golden opportunity. The answer why is quite simple: most businesses, large or small, don't consider it as an option. Interesting because most companies won't think twice about putting out a press release. Even if a publication does a feature based on your release, you're at the mercy of editors and reporters and there's no guarantee the article will depict your firm in the...

Financial Benefits of Environmental ResponsibilityUp until approximately 6 months ago, I was of the impression that being conscious of the environment was strictly for the benefit of the environment itself, and that I would derive nothing from it; the ultimate beneficiary of any recycling/waste reduction would be future generations, and the greater effect of my efforts would occur long after I was gone. Thanks to Dr. Anthony Watanabe and my work as the web developer for the Toronto Regional Green Building Festival website, I have come to the realization that there are reasons beyond the ecological benefits mentioned above. In speaking with Anthony, I noticed that he uses the word "sustainability" and...

The story began with our first night on Malta. It was a comedy of errors, though it didn't seem all that funny at the time. I foolishly rented a car and we drove around lost until nearly four o'clock in the morning when we happened to run into a friendly police officer who led us to our hotel. From that point, nothing especially eventful happened except that we found a wonderful little Guest House in the city of Sliema, the Soleado, and took up residence there. During our week's sojourn, we spent most of our days visiting Valletta and doing other touristy things and our nights trying out new things to eat. I actually liked Octopus and Rabbit stew. Grant Wood

Grant Wood was born in Iowa where he spent most of his life. As a young child he loved drawing with charcoal and after graduating from high school he studied art in Minneapolis and Chicago. During World War I he did camouflage work for the Army. Then he became an art teacher. At that point he had already found the essential imagery of his future works: rolling landscapes, folk architecture and farmers. However he still painted in a manner that was not particularly original, and which could be called pseudo-impressionistic. He went to Paris in 1923, but it is, in fact, his stay in Munich in 1928 that really influenced his art. In Germany Wood became fascinated by the work of the Flemish primitives...
